OM.
This Upanishad is a part of Atharva-Veda, the seer of this treaty is Rishi Angirasa. He is a Prajapati(progenitor) and one of the ten mind-born sons of Brahma. He is regarded as the priest of the Gods and a teacher of Brahmavidya, to whom many of the hymns of Rgveda are ascribed.
In this small upanishad the process adopted to describe Brahman is called --"shakhachandranaya". As the moon is pointed out to a child as the moon on the bough, because she appears to be contiguous to it , even so is the Brahman. Here, He is pointed out through the body and the mind, though He has no relation with them.
1. Om, then Angiras said: The Purusha (Brahman) is threefold, -- the Outer-Atman,the Inner-Atman,and the Paramatman. The skin, the nails, the flesh, the hair, the fingers, the bones, the ankles, the belly, the hips, the thighs, the cheeks and the eyes, the ears and the forehead, the head and the hairs, small veins and the nerves--are the part of which that is born and dies. This (body) is called the Outer-Atman.
2.Next is the Inner-Atman. He is consisted of earth, water, fire, air, and ether. Desire, aversion, pleasure, pain, lust, delusion etc, short, long, syllables and vowels, sensibility, consciousness etc are also his part He is the thinker, seer, comprehender, doer and verily the discriminating self who has the memory-- is called the Inner-Atman.
3. Finally, the Paramatman. He is to be worshipped according to the precepts of the Vedas. He reveals Himself to one who through yoga (by the process of yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dhyana, dharana and samadhi), or through meditation. He is more subtle than the banyan seed, and more refined than the hundred thousandth fraction of the point of a hair.He cannot be perceived or grasped. He is not born, neither He dies. He is beyond all qualities, without egoism, cannot be experienced with the senses. He is all pervading. Thus is the Purusha, who is named as the Paramatman.
OM SHANTI.
